About the project

In mid 2014, I was commissioned by a Newport based theatre company Screwpack Playwright to do an animation for their play titled, ‘The Forgotten’. The play was commemorating the 175th anniversary of the Chartists insurrection in Newport, where many men died fighting for political reform.

This was around the same time that the great chartist mural in John Frost square was due to be demolished to make way for the new developments of Friars Walks.

I proposed we try to bring the spirit of the mural back to life and animate the marching of the characters from the mural.  This was then projected on to the rear screen of the stage and formed part of the musical’s final act.

Making The Animation

The sequences is made up of 80 different characters base on 40 unique face models and 10 body models each with unique walk cycles. Changes to weapons, clothing, skin and hair colours, help to create diversity through the crowd.
